What is Pediatric Dentistry or Paedodontics?

It is the branch of dentistry dealing with children from birth through adolescence. It also promotes dental education for the parents.

What treatment modalities are offered by the Pediatric Dentist?

• Examination of oral cavity for both infant and teens.
• Habit counselling, in which the doctors help to keep the habits of kids in control.
• Correction of crooked and misaligned teeth.
• Treatment of dental injuries.
• Correction of abnormality in jaw growth.
• Habit breaking appliances for kids having bad oral habits like tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, thumb sucking etc.
• Space maintainers for the early exfoliation of milk teeth.
• Fluoride application for the kids having problems of decayed teeth.
• Management of dental pain and different types of dental caries.

What age group of patients does a Pediatric Dentist treat?

From the age of 6 months to the age where all the permanent teeth are erupted.

Why do we need a kid's specialist?

• Pediatric dentist is trained to take care of dental complexities of kids and teens and their future oral health.
• They are trained to manage each kid according to their behaviour.
• They are trained to do procedure under general anaesthesia.

What all treatments come under dental pain management in children?

• Pulpectomy or root canal treatments for children is carried out when the entire tooth structure is infected (both crown and root).
• Pulpotomy usually carried out when the small part of pulp got infected.
• And fixing of stainless-steel crowns or tooth coloured crowns.

How can we prevent cavities in children?

• Start good oral hygiene measures as early as possible.
• Give enough fluoride. • Limit or avoid certain kind of foods like sticky foods, too sugary...
• Periodic dental visits.

How can we prevent cavities in infants and toddlers?

• Always keep your baby's mouth clean by gently wiping the gums with acleancloth frim birth to 12 month .When the teeth are erupting use a gentle brush.
• In toddlers always help them to take care of their oral health and advice them the importance of good oral hygiene.

Can decayed milk teeth affect permanent teeth?

If milk teeth develop an abscess or infection during the development time, there are chances that permanent teeth may also get affected.

In what all conditions pediatric dental treatments are done under general anesthesia?

• When the patient’s dental condition demands prolonged treatment duration with multiple visits and multiple procedures under repeated local anaesthesia, it’s comforting for the child as well as parent to undergo single visit treatment under general anaesthesia.
• Some child patients may not be cooperative to treatment procedures. In such cases we use General anaesthesia.

Is there any alternative to treatment under general anaesthesia?

Yes.
Conscious Sedation is an alternative to General Anaesthesia for children. Conscious Sedation methods such as inhalation, light oral sedation, IV sedation. This method is used when general anaesthesia cannot be carried out.
This method can be carried out either on a dental chair or in operation theatre.
